Before he was recruited for Weiß, Ken was a goalie in the J-League. That's like a really elite
Japanese soccer team. His best friend, Kase, was also on the team. He mentions in the series
that this time was the happiest in his life. Unfortunately, Kase was very jealous of him,
and during a crucial game, offered him drugged water. Ken never knew what hit him. He was
accused of being involved in a gambling scandal and thrown out of the League. He went to
see Kase, who had a plan to get him back in (or so he said), and was nearly killed when a
fire destroyed the warehouse the two were in. So you see, it was all a setup. Ken was nearly
removed from the gene pool permanantly. I assume he was found by Manx and put into Weiß
after that, but I haven't seen past episode 16, so I don't know for sure. ^^; That's all
